2024 aluminum is well suited for parts and structures requiring high strength to weight ratios.  It is predominantly used in aerospace, with some power and general industrial applications.  The key alloying element is copper, enhancing strength via response to thermal treatment.  For end use applications subject to aerodynamic heating, 2024 aluminum is suitable at temperatures up to approximately 300°F.  2024 Aluminum has good machining characteristics and high surface finishes are possible.

Rolled Alloys stocks wrought 2024 aluminum in the T351 condition.  Extruded bar is solution heat treated (910°F – 930°F), cold worked, then naturally aged.  Stress relief is provided by stretching a nominal permanent set of 2%.  The effect of cold work and straightening are included in mechanical property limits.  Cold finishing of bar imparts exceptional dimensional uniformity and internal properties.
