What is a Duplex Stainless Steel?

Did you know that duplex stainless steels such as LDX2101 lean duplex (UNS S32101), 2205 (S32205) and ZERON® 100 super duplex (S32760) are made up of two phases? Unlike 300 series stainless steels that have an austenitic structure and 400 series stainless steels that have a ferritic structure, duplex stainless steels have a combination of both. With roughly a 50:50 ratio, duplex stainless steels can increase performance utilizing the strength and excellent corrosion resistance of the ferrite phase and good ductility and stability of the austenite phase. Along with their price stability due to their low nickel content, duplex stainless steels have become the cost effective choice in many corrosive applications.
