Where can I find the machinability rating of a specific alloy?

Overview

Machinability and recommended cutting data for many Rolled Alloys grades are provided in the Machining Performance Guide (PDF).

How It Works

Use the machining guide to reference surface feet per minute (SFM) ranges and relative machinability for stainless steels, duplex grades, nickel alloys, titanium, and more.

Steps:

  1. Open the Rolled Alloys Machining Performance Guide (PDF)
  2. Locate your alloy in the tables and review suggested SFM and notes.
  3. Adjust feeds/speeds based on your tooling and setup; verify results with a test pass.

Helpful Tips

Machinability charts are generally benchmarked to free‑cutting steels and can vary by source; use the RA guide for alloys purchased from Rolled Alloys.

Ensure rigid fixturing and sharp tools – many nickel and titanium alloys work‑harden rapidly.
